Go Green

Whenever we had a party at home, Toto and me had this bad habit of using too much of disposable paper plates and throwing them in the trash .Save the Planet .

But how many of us do try to implement them in regular life??One of my dear friend, S gave us the idea of recycling and told us how our future generation can benefit from it. For all my readers, I thought this would be a really gud thought to share.
5 steps to start going green

1. Bag It
Today: When you go out shopping, bring your own reusable bags. This preserves resources by cutting down on the huge number of paper and plastic bags that are discarded after a single trip.
Tomorrow: Combine your routine shopping trips with other errands, which will save you time and fuel.

2. Save on Electricity
There are many ways to trim those electric bills. Wash your laundry in cold water instead of hot, line dry your linens, and use a toaster oven for small heating needs instead of a bigger electric stove. Open windows to let the light in, turn off unneeded lights and appliances, and unplug unused electronics to counter the 'energy vampire' effect.

3. Save on Gas
Every gallon of gasoline you burn produces 19 pounds of carbon dioxide, so it pays to conserve (in more ways than one). Your car will work more efficiently if you obey the speed limit and avoid rapid, unnecessary acceleration. Keep your tires properly inflated and get regular tune-ups. Forget warming up under most conditions.

4. Shop a Farmer
Today: Shop at your local farmers' market. This will help support farmers in your area, so they won't be forced to sell off their land for development, and it will decrease your food miles, meaning less fuel will be used to provide your daily meals. Your food will be delicious and better for you.
Tomorrow: Eat as much local and seasonal food as you reasonably can. Your meals will be fresher, and will require much less fuel to transport, store and refrigerate.

5. Water Smarts
Today: Drink water from the tap, instead of buying single-use bottled water, which requires much more energy to produce, store and transport. Barely 20% of those plastic bottles end up getting recycled, and most are made out of petroleum. Use filters if you are concerned about your local water supply.
Tomorrow: Buy a reusable bottle to take with you on the go, so you can always refill it from a tap and avoid buying bottled water. Stainless steel is a good choice, because you don't have to worry about the potentially toxic chemicals that can leach out of many plastics over time.

This is just the beginning !!

Those are some great points. I am too trying to do my bit.
1. I switch off lights and fans, even if I step out of the room for 5 mins. At home we do not have an a/c. and at office, the a/c in my cubile is always shut.
2. I try not to waste water.Use it effeciently.
3. I dont accept plastic bags from teh vendors, I get bags from home.
4.I walk as much as possibel and refrain from using car.
5.I dont litter the road, I keep the sweet wrappers in my bag and later find a dustbin to throw it.
6. Last week, my brother and me, planted 5 rose bushes in our garden..

Our planet is dying...and its our only home...and that is getting destroyed. I just dont understand, why others are not pulling up their socks and doing something about it. Collectively.

I do follow some of the points...However, yet to take up the reusable bags funda..

Another tip: Unplug your cell phone charger or any other electric unit, when not using it..It seems only 5% of the power drawn by cell phone chargers are actually used to charge phones. The other 95% is wasted when you leave it plugged into the wall, but not into your phone.

We cant follow this on all appliances like microwave / tv ..maybe the energy conserved is small for one household but for a year, it adds up to a lot and if done collectively, it will definitely be significant..
Just my .o2..

Hey great points. The amount of stuff we waste in the US is not difficult to comprehend.
These points are good and if followed can make a difference, however small.
